Security has been beefed up at Zebilla in the Bawku West District in the Upper East Region following the vandalisation of property at the Bawku West District Assembly by a group of irate NPP youth last Tuesday.
The protests were against the appointment of Madam Victoria Ayamba as the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the area.
According to eyewitnesses, the youth, who were said to be supporters of one Patrick Ayaaba who also aspired for that position, in their anger, further vandalised a lot of party property, including chairs, tables and posters of the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Mr Frank Fuseini Adongo.
The angry youth went further to reportedly block the road leading to Bolgatanga and Bawku, while others were seen riding on motorbikes chanting, 2020 No Fuseini, 2020 No Fuseini. Mr Adongo is also the Deputy Minister of the Upper East Region.
According to the youth, a woman cannot administer the district as DCE, more so, Madam Ayamba was a National Democratic Congress (NDC) member, hence the President should not have chosen her as DCE for the area.
They alleged that during the campaign in 2016, Madam Ayamba was in bed with the NDC and even supported them with motorbikes for their campaign.
They mentioned Patrick Ayaaba, the Assembly Member for the Teshie Electoral Area and a businessman, as their preferred choice.
The angry youth said it was Mr Ayaaba who sponsored the party in the district when the party was in opposition and also bought motorbikes for party executives, supporters and polling station coordinators to enable the party to snatch power from the incumbent, Mr Cletus Apul Avoka, and the NDC.
The position of the youth is that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo should reverse his decision or else more trouble would happen in the constituency. Meanwhile, the Bawku West District Security Committee has met over the Zebilla issue.
