All too soon, the much anticipated Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) comes off this Saturday, April 8 at the Accra International Conference Centre and the big question on everybody’s lips is who becomes Artiste of the Year this time around.
In contention for Artiste of the Year are EL, Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, MzVee, Medikal and Joe Mettle. Although the music scene was a bit slow last year, some musicians were still able to get their songs out there and won the hearts of many music lovers.
For the Artiste of the Year category, Sarkodie and Stonebwoy stand the chance of walking home with the award considering what they did in the year under review.
A lot of people have already ruled out MzVee and Medikal, claiming the two didn’t do enough to be in Artiste of the Year category in the first place.
Reason being that MzVee was not as vibrant last year compared to those she is competing with. On the other hand, Medikal registered his name last year and that is probably why he is being considered for the award. He performed on almost all the university campuses across the country.
The argument about Medikal has to do with the fact that his Too Risky song was not that popular compared to EL’s Kaabuame, Sarkodie’s RNS and Stonebwoy’s People Dey.
More so, apart from Medikal not being a crowd-pleaser on stage, he only gained attention in the latter part of last year while Sarkodie, EL and Stonebwoy were already making waves with their songs.
Many are also rooting for Joe Mettle to win the Artiste of the Year award. It is true that he mounted a lot of Christian platforms to perform but his song Onwanwani was not big out there. He was not even nominated in the Gospel Song of the Year category.
Apart from his Kaabume song and his Bar 3 concert, E L did not really convince music fans about why he even got the nod to be in the Artiste of the Year category.
The two strongest contenders are definitely Sarkodie and Stonebwoy. It is going to be a tough race between them considering what they both did in the period under review. Aside the two hosting their own concerts, they were also relevant during the year under review. Sarkodie’s RNS and Stonebwoy’s People Dey enjoyed massive airplay.
Sarkodie’s Rapperholic and Stonebwoy’s Bhim Concert can be said to be the biggest concerts last year considering the number of people who attended the events.
The two artistes mounted all the major platforms and rocked as well. Between the two, however, it appears Stonebwoy stands a better chance of becoming Artiste of the Year once more.
Apart from the awards he won internationally, Stonebwoy did a lot of collaborations, both locally and internationally. His international tour with topnotch reggae band, Morgan Heritage, got him wide publicity.
The collaborations with Ras Kuuku, Article Wan and other international artistes make Stonebwoy the strongest contender among the rest and he stands a good chance of winning this year’s VGMA Artiste of the Year.
