Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, the MP for Tamale Central, has expressed his opposition to the Legislative Instrument (LI) proposed by Trade and Industry Minister KT Hammond, which aims to control cement prices.
He believes the LI is unnecessary and will not bring about any change.
The Minority in Parliament on Tuesday welcomed to the LI despite earlier voicing their opposition to it.
Concerns have been raised about the rising cement prices, with a bag selling for an average of GH¢105. To halt the rise, the government initiated processes to regulate the cost by introducing a legislative instrument.
During the proceedings in Parliament on Tuesday, Minority Chief Whip Governs Agbodza welcomed the LI, stating that the issues had been resolved and the LI no longer posed a threat.
However, in an interview with Selorm Adonoo on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Tuesday, the Tamale Central MP argued that the LI was inconsequential.
“I did not support this LI and I still do not support this LI. I made it very clear to leadership that I was against this LI…The so-called amendments to the LI, I haven’t seen it and I don’t think anybody has seen it…The point is that that LI is needless, it would not change anything.”
“What the Minister should be interested in is how he could alleviate the suffering of the people of this country as far as cement prices in this country are concerned…to be very honest it is much ado about nothing,” he stated.
