Over 50 persons have so far been sanctioned by the LEKMA magistrate court for violating the sanitation bye-laws under the Operation Clean Your Frontage programme at Nungua in the Greater Accra Region.
“It is always on the quiet side. People are going to court. They are coming in and out of court,” the Municipal Chief Executive for Krowor, Joshua Nii Bortey, said to Citi News.
Per the law, persons found in filthy environs are likely to be fined not less than 100 penalty units or a term of imprisonment not less than six months.
Mr. Nii Bortey, urged residents to be responsible for the cleanliness of their immediate environs.
He noted that the sanctions normally start with abetment notices to serve as warnings.
“We are not having a majority of people being arraigned before the court of law because a lot has to do with abetments… so when we give abetment notices, then they start cleaning the place.”
“When people get to the court, and they are found foul of the law, I think they should be summoned to work in the afternoon for people to see,” he added.
