Vice Chancellor of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Sunyani in the Bono Region, Professor Elvis Asare has indicated that engineers have a critical role to play if Ghana is to achieve the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Prof. Elvis Asare Bediako noted that the country cannot achieve the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals if engineers are excluded from interventions to help achieve these goals.
He was speaking at the celebration of this year’s World Engineering Day, which was under the theme: Engineering, Key to Achieving National Development.”
The annual celebration is to celebrate the significant contributions of engineers and engineering to sustainable development and modern life.
Prof. Asare-Bediako noted that “there is a lot more to be done to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals in developing countries to ensure that everyone has access to clean water, sanitation, reliable energy, and other basic human needs. A key world player in the implementation of solutions to achieve the United Nation’s Development Goals are Engineers.”
President of the Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhiE) for the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regions, Ing. Dr. Emmanuel Kwesi Nyantakyi speaking at the programme, urged more women to venture into the engineering profession as there are few women in the engineering field.
“I therefore want to use this opportunity to encourage women to take up courses in engineering, so they can be key players in national development.”
The Bono Regional Minister, Justina Owusu Banahene, on her part commended all engineers in the region for what they are doing in diverse ways to ensure the development of the region.
She disclosed that she will institute an annual Engineering Day in the region where engineers from all the 12 Municipal and District Assemblies will meet to deliberate on various challenges as well as successes chalked.
