The Ghana Journalists Association, GJA, is appealing to law enforcement agencies in the country to be considerate in the manner in which they arrest journalists.
This comes in the wake of the detention of some journalists accused of spreading false information about the government and some individuals.
The latest of it is the arrest of Accra FM’s presenter, Kwabena Bobbie Ansah, who was arrested for the publication of false news and offensive conduct, and Power FM’s Oheneba Boamah Bennie, who was jailed for two weeks and fined GH¢3,000 for contempt of court.
Speaking at a forum on ‘Exploring the Boundaries of Freedom of Speech’ organized by Citi TV and the National Media Commission, President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Roland Affail Monney, indicated that even though the actions of some journalists are not commendable, the style of arrest obstructs the freedom of the press.
“We are overly concerned about what is happening, but we believe that it is a bend and not an end to media freedom. Research has shown that public trust in the media is on the wane all because of perpetration of mediocrity, and carelessness which are on a rise. This is a wake-up call. At the same time, we would expect the law and order in communities to be humane and civilised.”
