GSA ready to support young innovators – Prof. Dodoo

The Director-General of Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), Prof. Alexander Dodoo has assured young innovators of the authority’s continuous support.

Prof. Dodoo gave the assurance on the back of the GSA’s certification of a solar-powered handwashing device designed by a young Ghanaian innovator, Richard Kwarteng.

The GSA Director-General said his outfit supported Mr. Kwarteng to go through the certification process within four days instead of the normal 21-day period.

Speaking to Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show, Prof. Dodoo said “We (GSA) offered to support him with the in-process testing and the documentation that he will need. We realized that the team may need assistance in producing the product brochure. Our PR department has offered to help him and all these are pro-bono.”

Assuring young innovators of the authority’s support Prof. Dodoo cited the GSA’s existing pricing strategy where young innovators who go through “the National Board of Small Scale Industries pay 10 percent of what they would have ordinarily paid and this has been ongoing for the past 10 years”.

There have been a number of innovations following the outbreak of the Coronavirus in Ghana.

Among some of the innovations is one designed by the president of Academic City College, Dr. Fred McBagonluri. He has developed a prototype mechanical ventilator.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, the GSA boss commended Prof. McBagonluri for the baseline prototype mechanical ventilator.

He further explained that the authority will review “the materials available and design standard specifications that meet the international requirement so that baseline prototype mechanical ventilator can be novel enough to be Made-in-Ghana such that it is cheap, saving lives and cost-effective.”

President Nana Akufo-Addo had stated that the government is putting in place measured to boost the local manufacturing of equipment to help stem the spread of the novel Coronavirus.

An example was the commencement on April 8th, 2020, of the local production of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) as a means to intensify measures aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19 in Ghana.
