Members of the Pig Farmers Association of Ghana have celebrated their maiden edition of the Porktober festival with a call on pig farmers across the country to endeavour to educate Ghanaians on the advantages of eating pig meat.
According to Kwame Appiah Danquah, acting President of the Association, the festival was to showcase to the world the good side of pig meat and change the mindset of people towards the meat.
“We want to use this festival to change the mindset of people in society for people to appreciate pig as a business and also pork as a protein on our table,” the acting President said.
Speaking to Citi News at the Porktober festival, Kwame Appiah Danquah indicated that plans are far advanced to partner the livestock division of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
He explained that the association wants to get involved in the Rearing for Food and Jobs programme where they will provide support in various forms.
“Already we are in collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, livestock division as well as the Barbecue Association of Ghana. So like I said, we are trying to do proper networking so that all the people within the value chain will come together so that we have one voice and make the industry more business-oriented,” Kwame Appiah Danquah said.
At the festival, various stakeholders in the industry such as the Ghana Barbecue Association, the livestock department of the Ministry of Agriculture as well as the general public were in attendance.
Kwame Appiah Danquah was optimistic that similar programmes will be held in the coming years adding that the festival has come to stay.
