The Ghana Railway Workers Union has said that the plant to build sky trains in Ghana may not inure to the benefit of Ghanaians and the Ghana Railway Company Limited.
Earlier this month, the Government signed the Concession Agreement for the construction of the Accra SkyTrain Project.
The deal was signed on the sidelines of the African Investment Forum which was held in South Africa.
At the signing ceremony, President Nana Akufo-Addo described it as “a happy day for Ghana and her good people.”
However, in a press statement released by the Ghana Railway Workers Union and signed by its General Secretary; Godwill Ntarmah, the union says the step is in the wrong direction.
“We wish to state that this initiative as well as other Railway Constructions in the pipeline though very good initiatives, do not inure to the benefits of Ghana Railway Company Limited.”
The statement further said the Ghana Railway Company may fold up if government goes ahead with the move to introduce sky trains and ignores the western rail line.
“GRCL has over the years been a burden on central government and until a total revamping of the Western rail line is done it will be impossible to sustain the GRCL”.
“Considering the financial challenges facing the GRCL we are of the view that anything short of total revamping of the western rail line from Kojokrom up to Awaso to enable Bauxite, Manganese, and cocoa, etc. to be hauled by rail cannot sustain the operation of GRCL.”
