The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, says government will provide the people of Old Fadama in Accra with better social amenities to make living in the slum community bearable.
He said the government is committed to providing potable water to the community, building schools as well as public washrooms.
While addressing residents during a visit to Old Fadama on Thursday, he assured them that they would not be evacuated from the area contrary to rumours.
“This community center got burnt and besides this is where you do your business and community meetings so Nana Akufo-Addo says this community center should be reconstructed as a storey building for you people so that you can continue doing your business here. I passed by the police station and it was an eyesore, the Minister for the Interior and Works and Housing have been here and we have concluded that we are getting you a new police station,” the Vice President assured.
Bawumia also said, the Government would soon start constructing 32 community toilet facilities (eight-unit block), 80 community bathhouses (four-unit block), re-construct the old community centre, which was razed down by fire into a modern storey building and kindergarten facilities in the area.
Bawumia announced that 2,000 head porters, popularly referred to as “Kayayie” in Agbogbloshie and Old Fadama would receive employable skill training and seed capital under the National Entrepreneurial and Innovation Programme to enable them to be self-reliant, with the ultimate goal of alleviating poverty in the two deprived communities.
“We are here to solve your problems. The livelihoods of Agbogbloshie and Old Fadama matter like those living in Cantonment and East Legon and so your needs are equally important as those in developed communities,” he assured.
Meanwhile, some residents commended government for fixing the main Agbogbloshie road, but called on government to improve security and provide jobs.
