Citi TV‘s War Against Indiscipline campaign drew some praise in Parliament as the house discussed the state of law enforcement.
The Bantama MP, Daniel Okyem Aboagye set the table with a statement on the Floor, where he acknowledged the campaign’s exposure of fellow legislators, security personnel among others.
“The Citi News reportage has generated a lot of public discussions about the fact that certain members of society which include lawyers, doctors, teachers, security officials and law makers do not respect our laws.”
The War Against Indiscipline was started by Citi TV in May 2019 and in June the station roped in police to name, shame and punish persons who break road traffic regulations.
Offenders were found driving on the shoulder of roads, driving against traffic, recklessly overtaking among others.
The Tarkwa Nsuaem MP, George Mireku Duker and the Kade MP, Kwabena Ohemeng Tinyaase were caught in vehicles that broke road traffic regulations.
The Kade MP notably went on tirade asserting his right to break the law because of his work as a legislator.
But Mr. Aboagye stressed that “members of Parliament should not be seen abusing the privileges in this country.”
Also in Parliament, the MP for Ningo Prampram, Sam George recalled the First Deputy Speaker, Joe Osei Owusu’s warning to MPs not to abuse road traffic regulations.
Mr. George remarked that legislators “ought to lead by example.”
“You’ve all seen the videos. If we had heeded the counsel of the First Deputy Speaker earlier this year, Parliament will not have been dragged into some of the things we have seen in the past few weeks.”
In his comments, the First Deputy Speaker admitted that MPs have “abused their privileges and extended the privileges to matters we do not have privilege in.”
Mr. Osei Owusu also paid tribute to the Citi TV and the police “for this collaborative exercise.”
