The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in the Northern region has attributed the water shortage in Tamale to the recent power outages.
Communications Officer of GWCL in the Northern Region, Nii Abbey, said the situation is affecting production hours hence their inability to supply water.
Some residents have complained about the discomfort the situation is having on their lives.
Mr Abbey also indicated that the pollution of water bodies through the activities of sand winning is also a contributory factor to the shortage.
The Northern Regional Office of the Ghana Water Company Limited had early on indicated that a debt of 51 million cedis owed it by customers, particularly state institutions, is seriously affecting its operations.“In respect of Tamale, it has to do with the frequent power interruptions we are suffering… As far as the outages are concerned, in January we lost 16 hours of production.”
“In February we lost 54 hours of production and for March we have lost over 105 hours so the power outage is making it difficult to meet the demands of the people. The problem also has to do with the pollution of the river which is actually hampering our operations as far as the inflows are concerned.”
According to the company, some state institutions owe it millions of cedis for water supplied them.
Parts of the country have been struggling to get water in the last few weeks.
The company says these financial constraints are largely to blame for the irregular water supply in parts of the region.
Public Relations Officer of the water company, Nicholas Nii Abbey said defaulters would have to settle their debts to keep the company afloat.
“If you look at the indebtedness from customers in the Northern Region, as at February 11, 2019, the level of indebtedness had risen to GHc 51.6 million cedis. That is how much they owe us. When you translate this to the number of months, that is 12 months continuously that the consumers have taken water without pay…If we have all these monies locked up, how do we invest?”
