Former President Jerry John Rawlings has attributed the increasing number of road accidents in the country to indiscipline and recklessness on the roads.
He made the comments on Twitter on the back of the two fatal accidents that occurred yesterday at Ekumfi Dunkwa on the Cape Coast stretch and the other one on the Techiman-Kintampo road.
Over 60 passengers earlier on that day [Friday] died in an accident involving two buses on the Techiman-Kintampo road while ten others perished on the Cape Coast road.
About 60 others also had several degrees of injury.
According to him, agencies and institution responsible for safety on the road like the MTTU, DVLA, GPRTU and NRSC need to step up their game to make the roads safer and prevent these needless deaths.
He also called on the judicial service to properly prosecute drivers who misconduct themselves on the roads.
In his tweet, Rawlings expressed condolences to the families and loved ones of people who perished in the road accident yesterday.
He wrote: “My heartfelt condolence to the families and loved ones of who perished in those two vehicles crash at Ampona in Bono East and Ekummfi Abor in Central Region. Too many lives are lost on our road due to indiscipline and sheer recklessness.”
Last month Rawlings was on the Prampram stretch of the Accra-Aflao road directing and controlling traffic and conduct of drivers because he could not stand the indiscipline of the drivers.
Former President John Dramani Mahama had also extended his condolence to families of persons who lost their lives in the two accidents.
Mr. Mahama in a tweet called on various stakeholders including the DVLA and Police to devise measures that will ensure that roads in the country are “safer.”
“I have received confirmation of two horrific accidents at Kintampo and Ekumfi Dunkwa, reported to have claimed many lives. Another sad day for our dear country. Our roads are becoming killing fields and road safety continues to be a major challenge,” the former President said in his tweet.
“All stakeholders on road safety- DVLA, drivers unions, Police, GRSC & Government must not relent in their efforts to make our roads safer. My condolences & that of the NDC go to the families of the deceased. Our prayers are also with those injured, wishing them a speedy recovery
