The GHC1 for Change Movement has donated reading materials to the Kalvio basic school in the Kassena-Nankana West District in the Upper East Region to boost reading among pupils in the school.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony at Kalvio, National Coordinator of the group, Helaria Wemeye Dalu said the reading materials will improve the vocabulary of pupils in rural areas.
Madam Dulu, said statistics from the Ghana Education Service highlights poor reading skills as a major problem confronting pupils in rural areas particularly Northern Ghana and to address this meant, encouraging and supporting pupils to cultivate the habit of reading.
“We want to improve the reading habits of school going children, because we believe that readers are big thinkers and thinkers are dreamers and as well dreamers are achievers.”
“So we are donating reading materials and medical supplies to the Kalvio basic school and the Kalvio CHPS and also launch our reader’s club which will begin to raise readers from the area”.
She said, female pupils and students in the area will be taken through sexual reproductive health education as a mechanism to reducing teenage pregnancy which negatively affects girl-child education.
Madam Dalu, said, the team will be working in the Kalvio community for the whole year implementing tailor-made programmes that will trigger retention of pupils in schools instead of seeking greener pastures down south.
She appealed to the public to contribute the little resources they have to the GH1 for Change movement to put smiles on the vulnerable, particularly in the rural poor areas.
The headmaster of the Kalvio basic school, Kutumowo Ignatius commended GHc1 FOR Change campaign for the reading materials.
He also appealed to the general public and philanthropist to assist the school with pieces of furniture and more reading materials (textbooks) to enhance reading outcomes among pupils in the school.
