The Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Charity Foundation (OOTCF) is collaborating with the Youth Inclusive Entrepreneurial Development Initiative for Employment (YIEDIE) project to provide jobs to disadvantaged young people in the construction industry.
The YIEDIE project which is currently being implemented in five cities across Ghana has so far trained a total of 16,739 young people in various skills in the construction industry.
The foundation has engaged with contractors in Kumasi to get them to absorb the 3,127 graduates who have undergone skills training under the YIEDIE project in the Ashanti Region.
The YIEDIE project targets youth between the ages of 17 and 24 mostly selected from less endowed areas.
Beneficiaries under the project are enrolled in practical and theoretical on-demand skills training in aspects of building and construction.
The courses include electricals, plumbing, masonry, tiling metal and aluminium fabrication, interior decoration, machine operation and steel bending.
The free training is spearheaded by a consortium constituted by the Global Societies Consortium, Opportunities Industrialization Centre Ghana, African Aurora Business Network, HFC-Boafo Microfinance Services and Artisans Association of Ghana with funding and technical support from MasterCard Foundation.
A Manager with the YEIDIE Project, Kafui Mills-Odoi said the focus of the project is to provide hands-on training for the beneficiaries.
She further explained that the collaborative approach is to build on the apprenticeship model and to enable them to follow a curriculum that is nationally acceptable.
“So we want to put all that together over a structured period for them to get the skills as quickly as possible. This is because; the sector is such that they should get practical skills. So that is the approach. Focus on getting as many practical skills and contact hours with the sector as much as possible”, she added.
Director of Programs at the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Charity foundation, Sophia Gifty Awotwe says the partnership will go a long way to reduce youth unemployment in the Ashanti Region.
She indicated that the foundation after carefully studying the project saw the need to include contractors within the region to get them to absorb the youth at their various workplaces.
The foundation is working on this project and making sure that our youth in the Ashanti Region also take advantage of the YIEDIE project and offer them free training. So is a project that has to be welcomed by all”, she said.
The engagement with contractors in Kumasi was to get industry players to engage the graduates for further skills training and employment.
Some of the contractors indicated their readiness to take up graduates from the Yiedie Project.
