Shop owners who were affected by a fire outbreak at the Odorna market last week have expressed fear that they might be out of business for a while.
This follows the opening of a part of the market that was not affected by the fire.
NADMO officials are still on the grounds collecting data and undertaking investigations as to what started the fire. But according to the shop owners, from previous experience, rebuilding the market can take months and this could be dire for their businesses.
“We need a place to work, what we have lost cannot be refunded, so for the place to be closed down for us to be thinking of what to do is a bother. We need a place to do business currently because for some of us the more they keep us waiting, the more some of us become discouraged. If there is any temporary place they can find for us, so that some us can start something to keep our customers it will help,” a shop owner said.
“The current situation would affect us a lot because saying we should sit in the house will be a problem for us. We are pleading with the government to open the market, I have four children, I can’t just sit in the house,” another shop owner lamented.
Last week Wednesday, about 80 shops were gutted by fire at the Odorna Market at Circle.
The fire started around 8:00 pm, and was brought under control by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service with four fire tenders.
Armed men and women of the Police Service were also there to keep law and order, while the National Ambulance Service was on hand to provide emergency medical services.
No casualties were recorded beyond the destruction caused to traders’ wares running into thousands of Ghana cedis.
A similar case of fire outbreak devastated the market in 2013 after the traders had closed and locked up.
