Freda Prempeh, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North Constituency in Brong-Ahafo, was at a ceremony for work to begin on 100-bed capacity hostel facility for the Tanoso Community Health Nursing Training College (CHNTC) in the Tano North Municipality of the Region.
The project, to be executed by Victory for Us Limited, a local construction firm, is estimated at the cost of GH¢2 billion and is expected to be completed by 2020.
It’s jointly funded by the Ministry of Health and the MP’s share of the Common Fund.
Mrs Prempeh, who is a Deputy Minister of Works and Housing, said the facility would improve on student enrolment.
She said the government places priority on improving on access to quality education, hence the introduction of the free Senior High School programme which was making a significant impact in the education sector.
The MP urged the nursing students to avoid unhealthy lifestyles and concentrate on their books.
Mrs Prempeh said nursing is a divine call and advised the students to prepare themselves well and develop the mindset of serving the people anywhere they would be posted after the completion of their studies.
Mrs Elizabeth Wiafe, the Principal of the CHNTC, said hostel was among the urgent needs of the school and commended the MP and the government for the assistance.
She said with the hostel facility, the security and welfare of the students would improve, noting because of the poor security, students were always attacked by robbers.
Mrs Wiafe said because the students rented private hostels outside campus it was making it extremely difficult for authorities to monitor their movements.
She said the College, which has 610 student populations, was in urgent need quarters to solve the accommodation problems facing tutors as well as a befitting administration block.
