Six persons have died after the car they were traveling in was swept away by floods waters in Adagya in the Bosomtwi District of the Ashanti Region.
The six are believed to be Jehovah Witnesses.
Four of the victims have been identified as 52-year old Kofi Wereko, his wife Abena Mercy, who is in her late 30s, and his son, 15-year-old Okyere Wereko.
Another occupant has also been identified as Asare Offei.
The other two persons are yet to be identified.
The victims were said to be returning from a construction site where the Church was putting up a Kingdom Hall.
The car was carried away by the floods at a collapsed bridge in the area.
It took the intervention of a joint team of divers and officials from the National Disaster Management Organization and the Ghana National Fire Service to recover the bodies.
The bodies have been deposited at the Pramso Government Hospital morgue.
An eyewitness, Mariam Issah narrated the incident to Citi News.
“Sadly, we saw an oncoming 207 bus. It passed successfully and their [deceased] car followed. It headed to another direction and somersaulted into the flood waters. We were there till 2 am and one young man shouted telling us that he’s found the car. We called officials from NADMO and the fire service. They went into the flood waters but couldn’t find the car. Around 5 am, some community members dived into the water and retrieved five bodies.”
Residents in the area say the bridge which collapsed about year ago is yet to receive any attention from authorities.
Chief Executive for the Bosomtwi District, Joseph Kwasi Asuming says his outfit will make provision for an interim bridge before a major construction is done.
“We’re working on it, for now it’s safety first. There is heavy rain and the place is not too safe to travel. Whatever we can do, we will do our best. As for the Assembly, we will take actions but residents should also be cautious. I have spoken to the MP and the Minister for roads to construct an interim bridge for us because until the rains stops completely, we can’t do any major construction works.”
