Leaders in the West African sub-Region have resolved to share security and intelligence information as a way of fighting terrorism and cross-border crimes.
The leaders at the 53rd meeting of ECOWAS Heads and State and Government in Lome, Togo, concluded that there was a need for early control mechanisms to address the numerous challenges facing the sub-Region.
Speaking to journalists in Lome, Ghana’s Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, said peace, security and stability remains the ultimate aim of all the leaders.“We want to ensure that there is enhanced coordination of activities by both regions so that there is no duplication. Most of the time, this region is doing the same thing because there is no coordination. Preventive mechanisms, sharing of information would be employed as well as harmonizing legal frameworks for all the member states within the region,” she said.
Suspend protests, continue dialogue – Nana Addo to Togo opposition
President Nana Akufo-Addo, who has been one of the mediators in Togo’s political crisis, recently urged Togo’s political actors to continue working towards a resolution in the impasse.
In the plea made alongside Guinea’s President, Alpha Conde, dialogue and consultation was noted as the way forward in the political tensions.
President Akufo-Addo and President Conde also appealed to the opposition to suspend street demonstrations during the dialogue.
In a communique issued after one of the meetings between the Togolese government, the ruling party and the Coalition of 14 opposition parties in Togo, the two Presidents, acting as co-facilitators of the dialogue process, expressed their satisfaction about the discussions so far.
