The National House of Chiefs has joined calls for an apology from the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, for “insulting” its President, Agbogbomefia Togbe Afede XIV.
Mr. Freddie Blay in an interview with Accra-based Joy News, reportedly described Togbe Afede as an ignorant person who talks like a palm-wine tapper, because the chief also commented on his acquisition of 275 minibuses for 275 constituencies ahead of the NPP’s national delegate’s conference.
The demand by the National House of Chiefs, of which Togbe Afede is the President, comes after the Asogli State Council made a similar demand, and threatened their next line of action if they do not get the apology. The National House of Chiefs in a statement signed by its Chairman of Governance and Development Committee, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, said it was “surprised that Mr. Freddie Blay descended on
the House and attacked its President in the manner he did.”
Togbe Afede, a businessman who is also the President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, has said that purchase of the buses by Freddie Blay, deepens corruption perception in the country. He thus urged chiefs to help address the worsening perception and incidence of corruption
“Some time ago, it was one party building a multi-million dollar headquarters, we all sat down and did not complain. And recently, an aspiring chairman of a party buying several 275 vehicles. These are matters that should attract Nananom’s attention. And I’m very happy that at least the latest one has attracted the attention of the special prosecutor. Unfortunately, the canker has spread so deeply” the Chief said about the 275 buses controversy.
The House of Chiefs say the comments by Togbe Afede do not “amount to a call or an investigation, let alone be a source of worry to an innocent person.”
It said thus it finds the insults from Mr. Freddie Blay “disturbing.”
