The La NkwantananMadina Municipal Assembly (LaNMMA) has said that it will cause the arrest of anyone who attempts mounting illegal structures at the demolished site near the Adenta Redco Flats in Accra.
More than 1,000 unauthorized structures in a slum in the area were pulled down by the police and the Assembly on Sunday following a Citi News report about criminal activities around the flat.
Some of the squatters later accused the MP for the area, Boniface Abu-Bakar Sadique of failing to get them a permanent place of residence as promised during the 2016 campaign.
They also claimed the Assembly did not give them advance notice of the action. But speaking to Citi News, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for La Nkwantanan Madina Municipal Assembly, Isaac Odoom, said the squatters were given enough time to vacate on their own.
“We’ve mounted a police post there. 24/7, they’ll be there till we are able to put the place into a good shape. This time we are not going to give them that opportunity again. Anybody who attempts to return to go the place will be arrested, that is why we have the policemen on the ground.”
“This thing has been going on for a long time. Anytime we demolish the place, they come back, but this time, the decision is to put the place into good use. We’ve been going there to give them several warnings.”
