The Ghana Highway Authority has announced that starting next Monday, April 30, traffic will be diverted at certain portions of the Mallam-Kasoa road to pave way for ongoing drainage construction works at the Mallam Junction.
The construction work, which will last 50 days, is expected to curb perennial flooding on that stretch.
The drainage construction is a project under the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) Sanitation and Water Project, and the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources and is expected to GHc 6 million.
Gabriel Engman, a Sanitation Engineer at the Ministry, explained to Citi News that “the whole project is coming up to about GHc 6 million… this particular aspect falls under the third component of GAMA and the third component deals with drainage works, liquid waste master plans and simplified sewage networks within the Accra Metropolitan Area.”
He also noted that “all the funding was supplied by the World Bank IDA funding.”
The GAMA Sanitation and Water project is a $150 million endeavour sponsored by the World Bank with the collaboration of the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources to help lower income level communities have access to affordable toilet and water facilities.
The project, which took effect August 2014, and is expected to end in July 2018, also seeks to strengthen the management of environmental sanitation in the GAMA.
The components of the project include the provision of environmental sanitation and water supply services to priority low-income areas of the GAMA projected at $31.5 million, the improvement and expansion of the water distribution network in the GAMA and the planning at $48.1 million, the improvement and expansion of GAMA-wide environmental sanitation services budgeted at $34 million, and institutional strengthening, with $20.1 million earmarked for that part.
