The Ghana National Association of Teachers [GNAT], has warned that the country risks losing lands for public schools to estate developers in the country.
According to the Deputy General Secretary of GNAT, Gifty Apambil, government must regulate the activities of real estate developers by protecting land banks reserved for the expansion of public schools.
“Government has a responsibility towards the society to make sure that land banks are reserved for public schools to be constructed, if not in future, even if government has money there will no land for public schools to be established. And they should make it mandatory for all estate developers to provide land banks for this,” she said.
She noted that access to public education would be threatened in the future if the government does not secure lands for this purpose especially at various sites being developed estate developers.
On the other hand, industry players in Ghana’s housing sector have consistently asked government to critically address Ghana’s land acquisition and documentation system to ease the burden associated with the provision of decent accommodation.
The estate developers contend that the high costs of properties have priced out the majority of prospective homeowners and compounded the housing challenge.
