A young voice is rising boldly within Ghana’s movie industry, and it’s one the nation may need to listen to closely.
Caleb Oteng Owiredu-Ofori, a fast-rising Ghanaian actor, has made a passionate call for increased funding and support for the local film industry, warning that the lack of financial backing is leading to a painful waste of talent across the country.
He did not mince words as he spoke to industry stakeholders, creatives and movie lovers at the just-ended premier of the ‘The December Blues’, a film written and directed by UK-based movie director, Michael Onafowokan.

“Ghana has incredible acting talent, storytellers, directors and crew members,” he said. “But without proper funding, many of these talents never get the opportunity to grow, be seen or even survive in the industry.”
The ‘The December Blues’ tells a story of the December feeling in Ghana, where love can be found and lost on back of distance.
According to the young actor, the persistent funding challenges facing Ghana’s movie industry have forced many promising creatives to abandon their dreams or seek opportunities elsewhere, leaving the local industry struggling to reach its full potential.
Having featured in The December Blues, where his performance has attracted positive reviews, Caleb says strategic investment, structured funding, and stronger public–private partnerships are crucial to transforming Ghanaian cinema and boosting its global standing.
As the curtains closed on the premier night, his message lingered: Ghana’s film industry is rich in talent but poor in funding—and until that gap is addressed, many brilliant stories and careers may never see the spotlight they deserve.
He also highlighted the need for movie producers and directors to jump on the bandwagon of transitioning from the local way of movie distribution and leverage on the growing interest of YouTube movies as the Nigerian movie industry is doing.
He wrapped up by sharing his ambition to gain the attention of international film producers and enter the Hollywood space, positioning Ghana prominently on the global stage.
