Fly540, one of the four domestic airlines in the country, has suspended its operations due to a realignment of the company’s operations on the continent.
The airline has written to the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) informing it of its decision to suspend its operations.
The Director-General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, Air Commodore (rtd.) Kwame Mamphey confirmed this to thebftonline on Friday. “What they have told us is that they are suspending their operations for a while,†he said.
According to information available to thebftonline, Fly540's crew flew out of Accra on Friday May 16, 2014.
The low-cost carrier has decided to focus its efforts on East and Southern Africa. It has however not ruled out a return to Ghana or Angola in the foreseeable future.
Fastjet, operators of Fly540, in a statement said: “As previously announced, Fastjet has concluded that although Ghana presents very significant long-term opportunities for the Fastjet low-cost model, in the short term the company intends to fully focus on the considerable potential of opportunities in East and Southern Africa.â€
There are three remaining domestic airlines with the exit of Fly540--Africa World Airlines, Starbow and Antrack--that offer flights from Accra to Kumasi, Accra-Sunyani, Accra-Tamale and Accra-Takoradi.
