THE Adaklu District Assembly has raised 60,000 cashew seedlings for distribution to farmers for free, under the Planting for Export and Rural Development programme.
This would benefit more than 500 farmers in the 91 communities of the district.
The District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Donkor Kadey, made this known to the Ghanaian Times at Waya, on Tuesday.
He said that apart from this support to farmers, the assembly had already cultivated 20 acres of cashew and two acres of coconut for itself, in a decisive move to boost its revenue in the next four years.
Mr Donkor entreated the youth to venture into cashew production, saying that the prospects were so bright with guaranteed ready market for the produce.
He said this was in line with government's ongoing plan to establish a cashew development board to facilitate the smooth purchasing of the harvests from farmers.
Regarding the advantages of cashew production, the DCE said that the cashew blossoms would attract bees and that would in turn enhance the vibrant bee industry in the district.
"The cultivation of cashew is also an afforestation venture which would benefit the environment," he pointed out.
"Meanwhile, land is available in abundance for the cashew project," Mr Kadey added.
According to him, the assembly attached high premium to the cashew project as it would generate more incomes and improve the quality of life in the district with a population of 45, 000, one traditional paramount stool and 13 electoral areas.
In another development, the 23 assembly members of the district have been presented with motorbikes to facilitate their work.
This is under a Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development initiative to support the performance of the assemblies.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Kadey urged government to consider placing the assembly members on a monthly stipend to attract quality members and effective service delivery to the assembly.
