Cameroon are Champions of Africa after securing a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Egypt in the final of the 2017 Cup of Nations in Gabon Sunday night.
Striker Vincent Aboubakar proved a super sub for the young Indomitable Lions side, sealing their fifth Afcon title with a late dramatic winner.
With two minutes from time, Aboubakar flicked the ball over Egypt defender Ali Gabr’s head before firing in a half-volley past goalkeeper El Hadary.
On 59 minutes, defender Nicolas N’koulou, who had come on for the injured Teikeu in the first half, rose highest to head home Cameroon’s equalizer to cancel out the early lead taken by the Egyptians.
Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny had scored the opening goal of the Cup final with a great technique into the roof of the net from near post in the 22nd minute.
A heartbreak it was for the Pharaohs on their return to the Afcon after a 7-year absence but also a great story for the Cameroonians who were forced to rely on young talents after 8 top players refused call-ups to represent their country at the tournament.
Cameroon will feature in the 2017 Fifa Confederation Cup as representatives of Africa later in June. They also will host the next Afcon in 2019.
