Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini has said that the attempt by the majority to quell the bribery allegations leveled against Minister for Energy, Hon. Boakye Agyarko is purely an intended to protect the integrity of Parliament.
“I have a lot of facts to prove that what has happened is beyond speculation,” he said on the State of Affairs show on GHOne TV Monday evening.
Last week, three minority MPs on the Vetting Committee of Parliament (Hon. Mahama Ayariga, Okudzeto Ablakwa and Alhaji Alhassan Suyuhini) came public on an alleged pursuit by Boakye Agyarko to buy his way through the vetting process.
The minority leader, Hon. Haruna lddrissu on Monday called for investigations into the matter and received the support of the Chairman of the vetting committee, Hon. Joe Osei-Owusu.
Discussing the bribery scandal on ‘State of Affairs’ on GhOne TV with Nana Aba Anamoah, Hon. Fuseini said the action of Boakye Agyarko if proven to be true can best be described as irrational considering the fact that the NPP has the majority in parliament and could pull through with the approval of his nomination against all odds.
His co-panelist Boabeng Nuamah, MP for Adenta believes that the allegations by the minority holds no credence and described the incidence as a full blooded assault on the majority by the minority.
He further alluded to the actions of the opposition as a smart way to reinforce a certain perception about the incumbent government.
“In any case, if this allegation is true, why didn’t the minority in parliament unanimously organize a press conference to speak to the issue cooperatively but rather a few individuals from the minority came out? The posturing of the minority is aimed at informing public opinion about this government in a certain direction and if we are not careful they will succeed,” Fuseini said.
Whereas, Hon Boabeng Nuamah is convinced that the bribery allegations holds no merit and should not only be subjected to circumstantial evidence but also motives, Hon. Fuseini says that he has no doubt in his mind that the alleged bribery scandal happened.
Both called on Parliament to as a matter of urgency investigate the bribery claims to restore public trust in parliament. However, Hon. Fuseini was worried that Parliament has never successfully investigated a matter and this could as well slip through.
Mr. Joseph Withal, Commissioner, CHRAJ argued that it is not in error for Parliament to investigate itself.
“We are watching to see how Parliament will put up the necessary structures to investigate this bribery claims to touch up public confidence in the institution of parliament.” He added.
The two panelists agreed that the Privileges Committee of Parliament exudes so much power and competence to probe the allegations and to cap the scandal. To this end, both sides in parliament supports the enquiry and pointed that they will soon invoke the power of the speaker to initiate the investigations.
Hon. Fuseini demystified claims by the majority that the minority is unhappy with it’s leadership especially Hon. Haruna Iddrisu and described the assertion as unfounded.
He remarked;”Haruna Iddrissu has been fantastic. There is no conspiracy or whatsoever against him. I’m not aware of any such case.”
Though, he was unhappy with the way the minority went public on the issue, he stated that it does not preclude the need for investigations into the bribery claims.
Hon. Boabeng indicated that the majority supports the inquiry because it takes the accusations seriously and called on the minority to stop fighting the case in the media.
