A retired Colonel of the Ghana Armed Forces, Col Festus Aboagye (Rtd) has urged the National Security authorities to say a word on their mission in the home of former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison, on March 19.
He said their loud silence on the issue is not helping public discussions on the matter.
“Why is the National Security not telling us why they went there,” he queried while contributing to discussion on the subject on TV3’s KeyPoints on March 22.
According to him, “If they had done that, this conversation based on what the Minority Leader, Alex Afenyo-Markin said, would not happen. At least, we would have had informed discussions.”
The security analyst suggested that, “they must have a press conference to inform the public. It is a public interest issue.”
On March 19, operatives of the National Security were reported to have stormed the home of Dr Ernest Addison.
They are reported to have ransacked the place and took away cars and CCTV installations.
The Minority Leader, Alex Afenyo-Markin, who visited Dr Addison moments after the incident informed the public that the security officers took away the CCTV installations and the cars. He further alleged that they “stole an amount of GHC10,000 from Dr Addison’s bed as well as jewelry belonging to his wife.”
In the absence of official information, the narrative has been varied. While some say the security officers went to the house to retrieve a vault full of money, others say they went in search of surveillance equipment.
The allegation, as related by Col Festus Aboagye is that, “Dr Addison is said to have installed surveillance equipment in his home, with which he monitors what goes on at the Bank of Ghana. And based on what he sees, he is said to have given some orders to officers to act in a certain manner.”
He noted that if this narrative is true, then “Dr Addison has no business doing that. He cannot place surveillance on a state institution.”
The security analyst urged spokesperson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) not to politicise such events. He explained that searching the homes of former state officials is not new.
“It is the manner in which it is done,” he stressed.
A member of the executive of the NDC and Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority, Mr Edudzi Tameklo, also queried why Dr Addison himself or his lawyers, have not come out to tell the public what happened.
“Why has Addison not spoken yet?” he asked while contributing to the discussion.
