Ghana’s Black Stars captain, Jordan Ayew, has appealed to fans to remain patient and supportive as the team undergoes a rebuilding process.
The senior national team, have experienced a downward spiral on the African continent in recent years, exiting the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) at the group stage twice in a row (2021 and 2023) and missing out on the 2025 edition in Morocco.
In 2024, under returning head coach Otto Addo, the team won only two of 10 games, losing four and drawing four.
In an interview with Joy Sports, the former Crystal Palace forward acknowledges that the team is going through a transitional phase, but he is convinced that with time, they will get back to their glory days. “International football has periods, and we are in a period of transition. The head coach [Otto Addo] has also come in with different ideas, so it will take time,”.
The Leicester City forward drew parallels with Manchester City who have been a dominate force in the English Premier League for the past seven seasons recent struggles.
“Look at Man City and their struggles this season, for example. It is the end of an era and it’ll take time for them to build again.”
Ayew reassured fans that the team has the talent and potential to turn things around, urging supporters to remain patient and trust the process.
“I think we need patience because I’m convinced we have the players to turn things around.”
The Black Stars are on the cusp of a crucial juncture in their World Cup qualification campaign, with two pivotal matches looming on the horizon.
On Friday, Ghana will host Chad at the iconic Accra Sports Stadium, before embarking on a challenging trip to Morocco to face current group leaders Madagascar on Monday.
Currently sitting in third place in Group I, the Black Stars are well aware that a convincing victory on Friday could propel them to the top of the standings.
