A long-standing land dispute between Kumani and Namani communities in the Nanumba South District of the Northern Region has taken a deadly turn, resulting in the loss of multiple lives.
Four persons are reported to have lost their lives in the latest incident on March 17.
According to eyewitnesses, the conflict began when a group of individuals from the Namani community attempted to cultivate the disputed land by raising yam mounds.
However, they were allegedly ambushed and shot by persons believed to be from the Kumani community, leaving three people dead on the spot. The fourth person died later.
The situation quickly escalated into a broader communal clash between the Sanbultiib and Kanjotiib communities, with reports of sporadic gunfire lasting for several hours.
Military personnel were eventually deployed to the scene to restore order.
The Wulensi court had been mediating the land dispute, but the sudden outbreak of violence has raised concerns about the need for more effective conflict resolution mechanisms in the region.
