Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana has criticised members of the National Patriotic Party (NPP) for their absence at the National Economic Dialogue which commenced on Monday, March 3.
The MP in an interview on TV3’s New Day, Tuesday, March 4 described the NPP members as “unpatriotic” for boycotting such an important dialogue to provide homegrown solutions to Ghana’s economic crisis.
He said members of the New Patriotic Party had no reason not to be present at the National Economic Dialogue because it brought together all stakeholders and industry players in the economy who had concerns about the country’s economic challenges.
“It doesn’t speak well for them because there is no reason to boycott this particular dialogue. This is a national dialogue. All stakeholders, people from academia, industry players, politicians, entrepreneurs, policy makers, traders from all over the country has gathered to look at Ghana’s economy.
“For NPP to boycott an important economic forum like this where we are all looking for solutions to the challenges that we are confronted with in our economy for me show them as a group of unpatriotic people,” he stated.
Edem Agbana further noted that he is not surprised by the actions of the NPP as the party has a penchant for boycotting national events, referencing the drafting of the 1992 constitution and the Senchi Consensus forum under President Mahama in 2014.
“I am not surprised because the NPP has a history of boycotting very important national events of this nature.
“The NPP and their tradition stayed away from the drafting of this national constitution. So, is it the case of the NPP that when they are not in charge, then nothing should move on in this country? They boycotted even the drafting of the 1992 constitution.
“Again when the NDC under President Mahama had what we call the Senchi Consensus to look at homegrown solutions to the challenges that we were confronted with in the economy back then, they also decided to boycott it,” he recalled.
However, the lawmaker is confident of a positive outcome of the Dialogue considering the presence of the numerous stakeholders, economists and industry players who were present at the Dialogue.
