Head of sporting affairs at Asante Kotoko Kwesi Appiah has called on the club to win the Ghana Premier League (GPL) title as a tribute to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The Asantehene, who is the club’s life patron, has been the key financier since the 2023/24 season.
Kotoko had a mixed start to the 2024/25 season, opening with a victory against Karela but losing four consecutive matches.
However, the team has bounced back strongly, winning four of their last five games and drawing one. With 28 points, they sit in fifth place on the league table.
Speaking to Akoma FM, Appiah highlighted the importance of rewarding Otumfuo’s investment by clinching the league title and securing qualification for African competitions.
“I believe the coach knows he must do everything he can to ensure we go to Africa next season,” Appiah said.
“Looking at the players we have now and the investment the King is making, it would be an honour to win the league and qualify for Africa next season to make him happy.”
He added, “So far, we are playing very well, and by God’s help, I feel that if we continue fighting, we will automatically win the GPL title.”
Kotoko last won the GPL in the 2021/22 season under Nana Yaw Amponsah. The team will aim to maintain their resurgence when they face Vision FC at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in the final round of games before the season’s first half concludes.
