Ruben Amorim believes Manchester United’s players should be “really really mad” with their inconsistent performances after battling to a 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield.
Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah overturned Lisandro Martinez’s opener before Amad Diallo fired a deserved equaliser for Amorim’s side, and the United head coach called out his players for not showing this level of application on a regular basis.
United had lost their last four matches in all competitions prior to an improved display at Anfield, with Amorim admitting they were under threat of relegation in the build-up.
“The expectations were so different to what we saw during the game,” Amorim told Sky Sports. “I get more mad because of the other games. It’s even harder to understand.
“This is not about the system or the technique, it’s about something else. It is hard to understand for me as the coach.
“It’s a point. I think they deserve the point, but it’s just one point and I think we should get mad and disappointed – more than the other day against Newcastle [a 2-0 defeat].
“More than those days, today we need to be really disappointed.
“I’m happy for the performance, not happy for the result, but I’m really, really mad because of the other games.”
When asked if he had relayed that message to his players after the match, Amorim responded: “No, because I need to calm down and say the right things.
“We are in a difficult moment, but it’s hard to not get really mad.”
United remain in the bottom half of the table in 13th place following this result and Amorim highlighted the importance of continuing to fight in order to move up the table.
“We need to fight to get out of this situation and if we play against Liverpool every day, we will do that,” he said.
“We have to do that against any opponent. We already proved in the other games we can do it. The way we were really competitive; that is the crucial thing going forward.
“Today I felt that the players really wanted it. The most important thing is that the players don’t relax tomorrow, forget about it and return to the same behaviour.”
