Ghana’s 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic will officially dissolve today, January 6, 2025, marking the end of its four-year legislative term, which began on January 7, 2021.
This transition ushers in the 9th Parliament and highlights another milestone in Ghana’s democratic journey.
The dissolution ceremony will take place during a final sitting, presided over by the Speaker of Parliament, the Right Honourable Alban Bagbin.
Members of Parliament will conclude all pending legislative business and bid farewell to the chamber as their term concludes.
The 8th Parliament has been particularly notable for its unique balance of power. At its inception, both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) held 137 seats each, with one Independent Member of Parliament.
This rare equilibrium resulted in intense debates and necessitated extensive negotiations to pass key legislation.
Following the dissolution, newly elected Members of Parliament will be sworn in at midnight, signifying the commencement of the 9th Parliament.
During the inaugural session, one of the critical tasks will be the election of a Speaker and two deputy Speakers to lead the new legislative term.
The 8th Parliament’s legacy includes a mix of challenges and achievements, reflecting the complexities of governance in a closely contested legislative environment. Its conclusion paves the way for renewed efforts and collaboration in Ghana’s legislative processes.
