The High Court has granted the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s application compelling the Electoral Commission (EC) to collate and declare the results of two outstanding polling stations in the Tema Central constituency.
In a ruling delivered on January 4, the court directed the EC to complete the collation process and announce the final results on or before January 6, 2025.
The decision comes amid concerns over the delayed declaration of results, which has caused uncertainty within the constituency.
Additionally, the court has instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure adequate security measures are in place during the collation process to prevent disruptions and maintain order.
The Tema Central constituency has been a contentious battleground, with both the NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidates claiming victory. The EC’s compliance with the court order is expected to bring a close to the electoral exercise for the constituency.
Background
The Tema Central constituency has been embroiled in electoral disputes following the December 7, 2024, parliamentary elections. The collation and declaration of results were initially suspended due to disagreements between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidates.
On December 9, 2024, the Electoral Commission (EC) resumed the collation process after disturbances had caused a suspension the previous day.
Subsequently, the High Court ordered the EC to re-collate results in six constituencies, including Tema Central, to ensure compliance with legal procedures.
However, on December 27, 2024, the Supreme Court annulled the re-collated results for four constituencies, including Tema Central, citing violations of the candidates’ rights to a fair hearing.
Amidst these legal proceedings, the EC’s Returning Officer for Tema Central reported threats to his life, leading to further delays in the collation process.
The NPP filed a mandamus application to compel the EC to collate and declare the outstanding results, which the High Court granted, setting a deadline of January 6, 2025.
The Inspector General of Police has been directed to provide adequate security during the collation process to ensure its completion without further disruptions.
The resolution of the Tema Central constituency’s parliamentary results remains a critical issue, with both major political parties closely monitoring the situation.
The EC’s adherence to the court’s directive is anticipated to bring closure to the electoral uncertainties in the constituency.
