Traders at the Kantamanto Market in Accra have begun the process of rebuilding their stalls and shops just a day after a devastating fire ravaged the market on Thursday, January 2.
The fire, which broke out in the early hours of the morning, caused widespread destruction, affecting over ten thousand traders and destroying more than 7,000 shops.
Despite the overwhelming devastation, traders are determined to recover.
A visit by 3News.com to the market on Friday revealed a scene of resilience, with traders clearing debris and making efforts to rebuild their livelihoods.
Meanwhile, President Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the victims of the fire during his final State of the Nation Address on Friday, December 3, 2025.
He described the fire as “deeply shocking” and extended his heartfelt sympathies to the traders who have suffered significant losses.
“My thoughts and prayers are with those affected,” the President said. “The government is committed to supporting the victims in their time of need.”
The President also assured the public that the government would work closely with relevant agencies to ascertain the cause of the fire and provide necessary support to the affected traders to help them rebuild their businesses.
