NPP’s 11-member committee led by Prof. Mike Oquaye to investigate 2024 electoral defeat

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has launched an 11-member committee to investigate the reasons behind its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The committee, chaired by former Speaker of Parliament Prof. Mike Oquaye, has been mandated to thoroughly examine the party’s internal workings, campaign strategies, and broader challenges that contributed to the electoral loss.

The committee has been granted a three-month window to conduct its review and present findings to the National Council.

According to Justin Frimpong Kodua, the NPP’s General Secretary, the terms of reference for the committee include:

1. Evaluating the party’s internal election processes.
2. Reviewing the overall campaign strategy.
3. Identifying factors that led to the loss.
4. Proposing actionable solutions to strengthen the party for future contests.

The 2024 general elections saw a significant shift in Ghana’s political landscape. Former President John Dramani Mahama emerged victorious with 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the valid votes cast. His opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP, secured 4,657,304 votes, amounting to 41.61%.

Mahama’s win marked a remarkable comeback and a decisive endorsement of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Beyond the presidential victory, the NDC also clinched a parliamentary majority, securing over 180 seats, including several constituencies previously held by the NPP.

Leadership changes in the NPP caucus

Meanwhile, the NPP has also made significant appointments to its parliamentary caucus leadership. The changes include:

• Alexander Afenyo-Markin: Appointed leader of the NPP’s Minority Caucus in the Ninth Parliament, effective January 7, 2025.
• Patricia Appiagyei: Retained as Deputy Leader of the caucus.
• Frank Annoh-Dompreh: Maintained as Chief Whip.
• Habib Iddrisu: Elevated to First Deputy Minority Whip.
• Davis Opoku: Appointed as Second Deputy Minority Whip.

The party is of the view that these strategic appointments aim to bolster the party’s cohesion and effectiveness in opposition as it seeks to regroup and realign for future political battles.
