Ghana’s Black Maidens were classes above Benin in the opening game of the WAFU B U17 tournament on Thursday as they eased their way to a 4-1 win at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence, Prampram.
The Black Maidens were high on confidence after picking up two wins and a draw in the lead-up to the tournament, with the last of the two victories coming in a 3-0 demolishing of Sissamba Ladies.
Ghana started the game on the front foot with Priscilla Mensah shooting the hosts ahead after six minutes before Christiana Ashiaku decided to run the show.
Ashiaku bagged a first half hattrick, scoring her first goal after 17 minutes and adding a second on the stroke of half time before the third came a minute later.
After the recess, Benin grew into the game and managed to nick a goal back on the hour mark.
However, Ghana managed to shore things up at the back, with Benin’s goal serving as a mere consolation as Ghana walked away as massive winners and walked our with maximum points.
The withdrawal of Burkina Faso prior to the start of the tournament leaves just Ghana and Benin in group A, with Togo also pulling out in Group B.
Ghana will face Benin again on December 14.
