The December 7, 2024 elections in Ghana saw a couple, Charles Cromwell Nanabanyin Onuawonto Bissue and Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, vying for parliamentary seats.
Unfortunately, their dreams of becoming parliamentarians together were shattered when they lost their respective elections.
It would have been a historic first in Ghana’s Fourth Republic for a husband and wife to become parliamentarians in the same parliament.
However, Charles Cromwell Nanabanyin Onuawonto Bissue, a former Western Regional Secretary and Presidential Staffer, and his wife, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, a former Deputy Information Minister and Member of Parliament for Akuapim North, unfortunately, had their ambition dashed.
Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei made a bold move by switching from Akuapim North constituency to Okaikwei North, where she won the parliamentary primaries with 341 out of 828 votes.
Her husband, Charles Cromwell Nanabanyin Onuawonto Bissue, also participated in the primaries for the Essikado Ketan constituency and secured 333 votes.
The December 7 elections brought unexpected results for them despite the constituencies being strongholds of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Charles Bissue lost to NDC’s Professor Dr. Grace Ayensu Danquah. Despite his strong campaign, Bissue secured 17,754 votes, while Dr. Danquah won with 26,166 votes, a significant difference of 8,412 votes.
In a similar upset, Bissue’s wife, Nana Ama Dokua, lost her bid for the Okaikwei North parliamentary seat to NDC’s Theresa Awuni. Awuni secured 28,363 votes, defeating her NPP contender, who garnered 20,627 votes, marking Awuni’s second consecutive term in office.
