Experts in the research space are encouraging the uptake of research and innovation by industry that they believe is crucial for translating scientific discoveries into tangible benefits for society.
They said through the commercialization of research, the country could create new jobs, enhance productivity, and drive economic growth.
They were speaking at the launch of Africa Research and Innovation Commercialization Summit (ARICS) scheduled for March 13 to 14, 2025.
They contended that Africans have come to the point that we take our destiny into our own hands to start producing our foods by focusing on what we have.
Speaking at the event, the Deputy Director General of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Professor Marian Quain sighted that bread has become one of the foods most Africans eat, and it is baked from wheat and for a long time we still import wheat while there are many varieties of wheat that can be grown in Ghana and the continent.
“Never in the history of our country should that Russia and Ukraine war create panic, where we look for hard currency to import foods we can produce in this country,” she said.
She said for the country to solve its challenges in all sectors of the economy, various research must not end up on shelves but rather get to end users such as farmers and industry for more opportunities.
It is against this backdrop that the ARICS provides a platform for collaboration and the exchange of ideas, paving the way for research and innovation advancements that can drive sustainable development and economic growth.
The summit would bring together top researchers, innovators, policymakers and the business community across Africa to discuss solutions to move research outcomes from the laboratory to the market.
Science and Innovation Network Manager Foreign Commonwealth and Development officer Lead, Johnson Masagotin Singir indicated that the coordination is important if we must avoid duplication of efforts and leveraging the best while addressing gaps.
For ARICS to be successful and achieve its goals, there is the need for continuous involvement of government, other development partners and donors, strategic industry partners, and other stakeholders.
