2024 Elections: We’ll be ruthless in enforcing the law if need be – IGP

The Ghana Police have pledged to go after persons who engage in violent acts to destabilise peace in the country during and after the December 7 elections.

Inspector-General of Police Dr. Akuffo Dampare said the election security taskforce will be ruthless if need be to enforce public order and rule of law.

Speaking to a delegation from the civic forum initiative and the Institute of Democratic Governance on Tuesday, November 19, the IGP assured Ghanaians that adequate plans are in place for the polls.

“We will engage where we want to engage, we will deescalate where we want to deescalate but when we have to be ruthless in the enforcement of the law within the context of rule of law, we will stop at nothing if that becomes the only option.

“So, Ghanaians should work with us, bear with us, have our backs and for us to confront anybody who want to take the peace of this country for granted,” Mr. Dampare stated.

According to him, the police has produced a first-ever election blueprint which he says took two years to be produced.

The election blueprint is to ensure a peaceful, free and fair election in the country for the next 30 years.

“It’s taken us more than two years preparing for this election because we have considered election to be a process and not an event. These two years has led us to produce for this country, the first-ever blueprint for elections covering every aspect of elections.

“When we were preparing this document, we have in mind the future of Ghana in terns of its democratic dispensation. So this document when we were preparing it, we have 30 years from now in mind so it’s a master blueprint that has come to mainstream election security,” Dampare added.

Dr. Dampare said since the implementation of the document, peace in elections across the country have improved.

“…the instances of pockets of selected violence have also been dealt with mercilessly in accordance with the law,” he said.
