Black Stars coach Otto Addo has called on the media to use their influence responsibly in shaping narratives around Ghana’s football, particularly during challenging times.
His comments came in the wake of Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and increasing criticism of his leadership.
“You have the power. The media have the power to control the narrative of games, not only by the results. You have the power to lift somebody up,” Addo said after Monday’s 2-1 defeat to Niger in Accra.
He admitted that while the criticism of his results is fair, the players deserve a reprieve.
“The players, I really need you to leave them alone. They give their all. But this is football. Sometimes you can be better or equal and still lose. This is football.”
Beyond football, Addo used the platform to advocate for peace ahead of Ghana’s upcoming general elections on December 7.
“I would like us to use this opportunity to pray for peaceful elections. I don’t want this football game to have an effect on this. It’s very, very important. We have a peaceful country; we should leave it like that, no matter the outcomes,” he urged.
In a show of solidarity, Addo extended his prayers for peace in Sudan and Niger, two nations facing political and social unrest.
“Even though they were our rivals, let’s pray for peace in Niger and Sudan,” he concluded.
Sudan and Angola qualified from Group F while Ghana finished bottom with just three points from six games.
