Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim has assured that “the soap opera is coming to an end,” promising clarity on his expected move to Manchester United on Friday.
While many expected an official announcement as early as Thursday, Amorim indicated that he wouldn’t address his future until after Sporting’s league match against Estrela da Amadora on Friday.
Amorim is set to sign a two-and-a-half-year contract with Manchester United, with an option for an additional year, though he likely won’t assume his new role until the November international break.
“The soap opera is coming to an end,” Amorim remarked during a press conference on Thursday, adding, “The fact that I can’t be so clear creates a lot of difficulty for me.”
United’s CEO Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth have been in Lisbon to finalize negotiations. Manchester United leaders involved in discussions returned to England on Wednesday night.
The Premier League club is reported to have paid Sporting an extra €1m (£840,000) on top of Amorim’s €10m (£8.37m) release clause to secure an early departure from his notice period, with further discussions about compensation for the coaching staff Amorim plans to bring to Old Trafford.
