Asante Kotoko were beaten for the first time this season, losing 2-1 defeat to bottom side Legon Cities at the University of Ghana Stadium on Wednesday.
Legon Cities, seeking redemption after a dismal start to the current campaign (five losses, two draws), stunned the Porcupine Warriors with a hard-fought 2-1 victory to secure their first win of the season.
Meanwhile, Kotoko, who were aiming to move level with Bibiani Gold Stars at the top, squandered the chance against struggling Legon Cities.
Former Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu, who was in attendance to grace the occasion, acknowledged Kotoko’s impressive start to the season despite the setback.
“I’ve watched a lot of games, and Kotoko have been playing well. Unfortunately, they lost today, but one loss in eight games isn’t bad though they have a lot of room for improvement,” he said.
The former U-20 World Cup winner attributed Kotoko’s defeat to injuries within the team, stating that the recovery of key players will bolster their performance. “Kotoko have injuries, but some players are recovering, they’ll get better.”
Legon Cities, on the other hand, celebrated their first win of the new campaign, ending Kotoko’s four-season dominance over them. The victory marked a significant turnaround for the Royals, who had struggled to find their footing earlier in the season.
The loss may serve as a wake-up call for Kotoko, but Agyemang-Badu remains optimistic about their prospects. With key players returning from injury, Kotoko are poised to regain momentum.
