Lecturers from the University of Ghana (UG) who are supporting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have criticized President Akufo-Addo’s government for its perceived inaction on illegal mining (galamsey).
The lecturers, who took to the streets of Atomic on Tuesday, October 8, to rally support for NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama ahead of the 2024 general election, emphasized their concerns about the growing galamsey menace.
Prof. Michael Kpessa-Whyte, a prominent academic leading the campaign, argued that teaching in lecture halls is no longer sufficient. He stressed the importance of engaging the public in meaningful discourse, especially on critical issues like galamsey, which is ravaging the country’s environment.
“What future are we leaving for our children and generations yet unborn?” Prof. Kpessa-Whyte asked, referring to the irreversible environmental damage caused by galamsey activities. “Kwame Nkrumah left this country in a better state. We must do the same,” he added.
According to Prof. Kpessa-Whyte, the NPP government’s failure to act decisively against galamsey is a key reason for the lecturers’ involvement in the political process. He urged Ghanaians to vote out the current government on December 7, citing the deteriorating conditions under President Akufo-Addo’s administration.
Prof. Nana Ama Brown Klutse, another lecturer supporting Mahama, echoed similar sentiments. She called for a temporary ban on illegal mining as an immediate measure to protect the country’s forests, land, and water bodies. “Put a temporary ban on galamsey. Let’s sit back and explore sustainable mining practices that can protect our water bodies,” Prof. Klutse said, demanding concrete action from the president before the election. “He has less than two months to show us that he is serious about this issue.”
The lecturers have committed to continuing their public engagements until election day in December, with plans to hold similar activities aimed at convincing the public to support John Dramani Mahama’s presidential bid.
