The Ghana Electrical Contractors Association (GECA) has expressed concerns over the increasing number of non-functioning streetlights in Ghana, especially the recent disappearance of streetlights on the Accra – Tema Motorway.
In a press statement issued by the Association dated 7th October 2024, GECA noted that the absence of adequate streetlights poses significant risks to public safety, national security and economic development.
The statement further stated that “it is unacceptable for major highways, residential areas and commercial centers to be plunged into darkness, leading to crimes and accidents hence urgent attention and lasting solutions must be found.”
GECA believes that this situation is an indictment on Ghana’s engineers, contractors, and authorities responsible for maintaining public infrastructure and therefore have suggested some immediate actions and long-term solutions which include: nationwide thorough assessment of streetlights infrastructure, replacement of damaged or stolen ones, improved security surveillance and collaboration with the law enforcement agencies to deal with the crime related issues.
Some of the long-term proposals include: Investment in modern smart streetlights technology, Public Private partnership in public lighting management, and a full implementation of the ‘Street Lighting in Ghana-Policy Framework 2011’ among others.
The President of the Ghana Electrical Contractors Association (GECA), Awal Sakib Mohammed told 3 FM that they are fully prepared to support the government of Ghana to resolve the issue.
“We call on all stakeholders to join forces to restore safe and well-lit public spaces” GECA appeals.
