Alidu Seidu’s journey from playing football on the streets of Kumasi to Ligue 1 has been driven by one factor: his mother.
The bond between them is profound, and it was only fitting that he invited her from Ghana to witness his signing with Stade Rennais.
The emotional moment, captured in photographs of the two together with his Rennes jersey, symbolizes not just a personal achievement but a celebration of their shared struggles and triumphs.
The Rennes defender in an interview with Flashcore shared the sacrifices of his mother.
“My mum suffered a lot. I saw her suffering a lot to get something for us to eat. Sometimes when I have to travel to play for matches, my mum tries her best even if she doesn’t have money. Even when she’s unable to raise funds for my games, she will comfort and encourage me that she will make sure I don’t miss the next one.”
“My motivation is to put a smile on my mother’s face,” he added. “She always fought for us to have what we need. Sometimes there is nothing to eat, but when you see her putting so much effort to ensure we get something to eat, I can’t forget that.”
Now playing in Ligue 1 and representing the Ghana national team, Alidu is making his mother proud. His recent recognition as Rennes’ Player of the Month for September, voted by fans, signifies his impact on the pitch.
He has also earned accolades for his performances against top teams like Paris Saint-Germain and RC Lens, showcasing his growth as a player.
Seidu is expected to carry his form from France and help the Black Stars when they face twice Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
