The Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has reaffirmed that the next NPP government will not ban small scale mining but will empower small-scale miners to engage in responsible mining and expand their operations.
Addressing community members and party supporters at a campaign event in Manso Adubia constituency in the Ashanti Region, he highlighted the distinction between responsible, regulated mining and illegal activities that harm forests and water bodies.
NAPO announced a significant shift in the government’s approach to combating illegal mining in Ghana. He emphasised that the NPP’s main goal has always been to manage Ghana’s mineral resources in a way that benefits the people and drives economic growth without harming the environment.
As part of his campaign tour, he visited a number of churches in the Manso Adubia constituency to worship with them.
He expressed deep appreciation to the churches for their prayers and blessings, not only for the presidential candidate and himself but for the entire New Patriotic Party.
He also took the opportunity to remind the congregations of the NPP’s strong track record in office, particularly in the agricultural sector and other critical areas of the economy.
He shared Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s vision to promote responsible mining practices, with a key initiative being the establishment of a Minerals Development Bank in collaboration with the private sector.
“This bank will play a vital role in supporting sustainable growth in the mining industry.
Speaking to enthusiastic supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) NAPO assured miners that the next NPP government will no longer resort to stop illegal mining but will instead implement measures to support lawful mining operations, highlighting the planned reforms.
He disclosed that the Minerals Development Bank will provide financial support to the mining sector, aimed at fostering sustainable and responsible mining practices while minimizing harassment faced by miners.
Asserting the NPP’s superior track record in economic growth indicators, he highlighted the government’s achievements in areas such as cocoa production, farmer incentives, and improving the overall welfare of cocoa farmers.
He pointed out that Ghana achieved its highest-ever cocoa production of over one million metric tonnes during the 2020/2021 crop season. He attributed this milestone to the government’s strategic investment and prioritisation of the cocoa industry.
The clergy also prayed to seek God’s protection for the running mate and the NPP.
