If you give the nation to the wrong captain, you are all going to get shipwrecked – Boadi Nyamekye

Founder of The Makers House Chapel International, Rev Dr. Michael Boadi Nyamekye has called on the church and clerics not to detach themselves from politics and governance.

The revered Pastor and academic explained that since the days of the ancient philosopher Nicholo Machiavelli, there has been the debate of whether the church should be decoupled from the politics and governance of the state.

However, Dr. Nyamekye opines that the church should be involved in leadership and politics because whatever happens in the nation affects the church and if the governance is given to the wrong people, everyone will suffer.

“I think the church should be involved in leadership because whatever happens in the nation, all of us are involved and so if you give the nation to the wrong captain, you are all going to get shipwrecked and so it will be just right for somebody to guide them” he told Giovanni Caleb in an interview on the 3FM Drive show on Wednesday 2 October, 2024.

Rev Boadi Nyamekye went on to explain further that “The church is a microcosm of the larger population. It is made up of all kinds of people; politicians, business people, students and everybody. We all come together to form the church”.

He acknowledged that he is not speaking for the Christian Council but as someone coming from a very academic perspective and appreciating what happens within the spaces, he strongly thinks clerics should not shy away from state leadership or commenting or directing or giving their inputs where necessary to be able to move the nations of the world forward.

“In the case of Ghana, we need our people, our clerics whether you look at it from the Islamic perspective, the imams, and the sheiks, or you look at it from the Christianity perspective, from the archbishops to the ordinary pastors, there should be an amalgamation of efforts because we are supposed to show the way, lead the way, tell the way, direct the way, rebuke when people are in error and whip them back into line. That’s what we are supposed to do. That should be the position of the church if we want progress” Rev Dr. Boadi Nyamekye stressed.
